John F. Maher, MD
John Maher entered medical school with a case of nearsightedness. Although he originally intended to study internal medicine, after being fitted for glasses—and later for contact lenses—he was filled with fascination for the human eye. He took a part time job in the ophthalmology clinic, introducing him to what he came to see as the most fascinating and beautiful part of the human body.
In 1981, Dr. Maher graduated from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois where he completed his residency in ophthalmology. Upon achievement of his medical degree, Dr. Maher returned to California where he accomplished his fellowship training at the University of California, San Diego. He began his practice in ophthalmology in Torrance, California in 1986.
Today, Dr. Maher is a board-certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in Cornea and External Diseases. He maintains memberships in Loyola University’s Foreign Ophthalmologic Care from the United States, the Los Angeles County Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the Los Angeles Society of Ophthalmology and the Orange County Society of Ophthalmology.

“The human eye is so beautiful, and it can retain that beauty throughout life. It’s such a pleasure for me to examine and treat my patients’ eyes, and I think our patient-centered approach is just a natural outgrowth of my enthusiasm. Our patients respond well, too. Through simple and direct communication, we create a warm, friendly environment in our practice.”
“Few people start out with a grand plan. I wanted to be able to work in the same community that I raised my family in and fit in. My wife went to South High School and graduated from Long Beach State. We live in South Torrance with our two children and work just a couple of miles away. Staying in close proximity to the patients, referring doctors and treatment facilities eliminates many problems. We’ve enjoyed tremendous growth, yet we continue to maintain a small-town feel in how we practice and relate to our patients.”
